Mission Statement

Central Valley High School students will maximize curricular opportunities for its students through online course offerings while reducing operating costs for taxpayers.

Objectives for Central Valley Online:

1. Increase curricular offerings for the 2011-12 school year with the addition of online courses in Mandarin Chinese and Japanese
  • These courses will begin with Level I courses for students grades 9,10,11, and 12 in 2011-12. Each year the next level will be added so that by the 2014-15 school year four levels of Mandarin Chinese and Japanese are part of the curriculum.
  • Success will be measured by enrollment increases each year in the program.
  • The district curriculum department and the middle school/high school Foreign Language departments welcome the expansion of the curriculum at a measured pace.
  • It is realistic to add a level each year in order to build the program and provide sustainability for the courses.
  • Given that 1/5 of the world speaks Chinese, and Japan has the third largest Internet community behind the US and China, it is easy to see why these two languages would be a timely addition to the curriculum.
  • The Foreign Language department teachers will be expanding their own understanding of language while they work to bring this goal to fruition.
  • While this will be personally rewarding to the teachers and students, added incentives will exist for the teachers in terms of supplemental income to monitor student attendance in the online class.
2. Reduce operating costs by offering an online health course to students beginning with the 2011-12 school year upon the retirement of two current health teachers.
  • Offered online, the curriculum and teacher will be a purchased/contracted service with an existing online course provider.
  • It will be easy to measure the cost savings based on the difference between the contracted service and the savings of not hiring two teachers to replace the retiring staff.
  • This will be welcomed by taxpayers who will save money and welcomed by students who will be able to take their health requirement during the summer or school year when it best fits their schedule.
  • This is a tried and true method for curriculum delivery - Central Valley will not be the first to offer a course in this manner.
  • The advent of the new graduation rules in Ohio put students in a tough position - not being able to take electives because of CORE requirements and district requirements, offering Health online is timely.
  • The Physical Education Department staff will work to bring this goal to life. Once that is achieved, they will have learned about online courses and will have new knowledge to put to use in their own classrooms.
  • Many of the staff are also taxpayers in this district - it will be rewarding for them to see that their tax dollars are being used wisely while the curriculum will not suffer.
3. In 2011-12 begin an asynchronous online course in Financial Literacy that will meet the requirements of Ohio CORE for graduating seniors
  • The CORE graduation requirements for all Ohio seniors now includes a financial literacy component that can currently be met in two ways - through coursework in Economics or a course in the Family and Consumer Science department. This is a bit of a strain for students who do not want to take these two courses, yet must have the financial literacy component met for graduation. In order to resolve this bottle-neck, Central Valley Online will offer an online course that students can take to meet the requirement.
  • It will be easy to measure the success of this goal based on how many students use this avenue to gain the requirement for graduation.
  • Students will pay a fee to take this course to offset the cost of designing, planning and administering the course so those working to achieve it by helping to create the curriculum will be excited to help.
  • The curriculum already exists as part of the two face-to-face classes, moving it to an asynchronous online course will not be insurmountable given the timeframe of approximately 15 months lead time.
  • Adding an asynchronous course is very timely in today's Web 2.0 world of technology. Many of these students are college bound and will be able to use the skills they acquire in this online course during their college experience.
  • Those who work to create the course will be expanding their knowledge of learning management systems which will be a valuable skill in their other courses.
